Live off the land?
MMMMMMMMMMM............ Its been said granndaddy lived on 6000 caloories a day and what would it take to... oh for get it,life is simple, and easy to sustain. |
Re: How to Live off the Land
Simple equation. Take in more calories than you expend obtaining them.
the trick is to do that while staying warm, dry and uninjured. Easier said than done. |
Re: How to Live off the Land
For anyone following that advice, especially an urbanite........good luck........you'll need it.

Re: How to Live off the Land
If you do not consider yourself a 'woodsman', and a damn fine one at that, taking your chances in the bush in pure survival mode will lead to a sure and slow death, imo.
On another point, what is the probability of a large scale foreign invasion of North America? IMO, pretty hard to pull of logistically. Any opinions? |
Re: How to Live off the Land
Thanks for the link TS. Didn't have time to read it through (too late) but I scanned through and it looks like there is some good info there even if just to get you thinking.

Also if you think this might be part of your plan it would be much wiser to find a spot and build a decent shelter and stash supplies now. I don't think living out of a tent with only the supplies you can carry in a pack would work out too well for most people. The $50 and Up Underground House Book by Mike Oehler had some good ideas in it that might be applicable to this situation. I wouldn't want to live in that type of shelter long term if I didn't have to but it would be almost ideal if you were living in the bush because it would be almost invisible from the air and uses minimal materials. Much better then a tent or improvised shelter. You can download it here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/14741077/T...und-House-Book |

Re: How to Live off the Land
There are some people that think they will survive on hunting and trapping alone. Here is a guy that experimented with eating mostly animal flesh, and a small amount of greens.
http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showt...hreadid=263561 "Since so many folks keep telling me that they will hunt to provide for there family if SHTF, I decided to put the wild game diet to the test for a week. I assumed that for a week that game would be endless since most of my neighbors are pacifist liberals. I have a freezer full of Elk and venison so that is what got used for the test. I took a multi-vitamin and vitamin C tablet everyday. I started out at 189 pounds of lazy and decided that I would have to perform a mile worth of walking a day to get my meals, which I performed on trails near the house and collected any wild edibles that I could find, which mostly consisted of a handful of wild onions, wild grape leaves from the one vine that I found, and dandelion greens. I even choked down what little fat was on the meat and ate the deer heart, liver, and kidneys. Here is what I have determined. 1) I tripled my water intake after the first day and was constantly thirsty. 2) I could not make it through the night without drinking and pissing at least twice, which had a very strong odor. 3) Even with daily showers, by day four my wife said that she could smell me across the room an hour after showering. 4) I lost all my energy within a day. 5) After my day one crap, I only managed one more during the whole test. 6) No matter how you prepare it, you get sick of eating meat. 7) No dandelions left in the yard and I rationed them. 8) I felt much hotter than normal and had to lower the temp in the house on day 3. I lost 13 pounds in one week and ended at 176 and felt like shit. My blood pressure finally returned completely to normal two weeks later. My at rest heart rate has not returned to normal yet and is now running 5-6 bpm high average from a peak on 15 bpm high average. My guess is that you would be dead in 3-4 weeks if this was your plan and you did not have an ample source of complex carbs stashed and more greens. -yarro" |
Re: How to Live off the Land
When the only fellas living off the land are Eric Rudolph, the Unabomber, and you, sustaining yourself is probably not a problem. When the millions of fleeing urbanites are in the forest on their hands and knees, looking for mice to eat, then it is.

The Indians that lived in the area that I do now survived off of mainly wild game and plants they could harvest from the wild. As far as I know they did not conduct any sort of agriculture and they did fine. Something is missing in his test that is causing the problems. It sounds like he was showing similar symptoms to rabbit starvation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_starvation Not enough fat in the diet and dandelions have diuretic properties so you wouldn't want to depend on them for your main source of greens. There probably is more too it then this but I would have to study up more on the subject to see where he went wrong. |
Re: How to Live off the Land
Your digestive system gets used to things that you always eat. Anytime you change your diet, there is discomfort. I would guess that this will be less of a problem the longer you go.

Re: How to Live off the Land
I was going to comment on that as well. The guy probably went from eating a typical American diet which has way too much carbs and sugar to eating basically a no carb, low fat diet. Of course if you do that then you will feel like crap. It takes a fair while for your body to become accustomed to a new dietary regimen. Plus he didn't say how many calories he was consuming but I think it would be safe to say that it wasn't enough. Once again if you are not eating enough you will feel like crap.
If most people tried eating the way I do for awhile I am sure it would be uncomfortable at first but it works for me. |

At least the link mentioned insects. If you attempt this, you'd be crazy to ignore insects as a source of protein. |
